Welcome! My name is Sean French-Byrne, and I'm a playwright and author writing stories about queer love and death. I'm fascinated with moments of transformation and transition, and states of being that walk the line between one thing and the next - dwelling between death and life, between binary gender, between pin-able extremes.
I love to write about worlds in which strict systems of power and convention exist, and then find the liminal spaces in those worlds - what do relationships become, out of sight of land?
Voyage of the August
A tale of queer love and mutiny on the high seas! The Voyage of the August chronicles the final voyage of a merchant ship bound for England in 1717, whose crew takes their fate into their own hands. Exploring 18th century nautical culture, queer history, and shipboard conflict, and featuring original music and a cast-recorded selection of sea shanties, the Voyage of the August is a nine-episode self-contained story.
Grail Knight
Grail Knight, written by Sean French-Byrne and directed by Ezekiel Baskin, was an immersive retelling of the story of the Quest for the Holy Grail. Here Sir Galahad, the last knight of the Round Table, is reimagined as a young trans girl struggling under the weight of destiny and the task of fixing her predecessors’ Camelot. Living in a broken world, she faces questions that haunt us today: How can we fix the mistakes of our predecessors? Is there room to live and love in a dying world? How can we break from the power structures and narratives we are raised with?
